Music Therapy

What is Music Therapy?

Music Therapy is a professional health discipline that utilizes the application of music interventions for non-musical therapeutic goals.  Music Therapy interventions restore, maintain, and improve mental and physical health, thus changing brain and behavior functioning in the areas of cognition, communication, social, motor, physical, and physiological.  Music Therapy interventions motivate, provide timing cues, facilitate motor movement, and encourage social interaction.

Music is a universal medium that impacts all people and creates a non-threatening environment.  Music brings people together, transforms mind, body, and spirit, educates, and rehabilitates people that have lost functioning in any part of their bodies.  Music is processed on both sides of the brain and is processed differently than other mediums such as speech.  This unique processing creates opportunities for enhanced learning and training.  Current scientific research on the brain, rhythm, and music transforms the music therapy model from a psychosocial model to a scientific, evidence-based model.  Music therapists are revolutionizing an evidence-based practice through therapeutic results.
